Holm wins again
Thursday night in Temecula, Calif., at the Pechanga Resort & Casino: Albuquerque’s Holly Holm (21-1-2, 6 KOs) defended her IFBA welterweight belt with a 10-round unanimous decision over Belinda Laracuente (23-18-3, 9 KOs). Scorecards read 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93. “I think I still controlled and dominated the fight, even though I think I could have been better,” said Holm after the fight. “It was a great learning experience. I just think I should have followed up when I hit her hard with some shots. It was a different experience for me because we’re both movers, not like the fighters I’ve been up against recently. I think I adjusted well. It’s different trying to cut off the ring and trying to defend against a looping punch rather than one that comes straight at you.”

Becky Garcia returns Friday!
By Rick Scharmberg: Unbeaten flyweight Becky “La Guerrera” Garcia (5-0, 3 KOs), of Mesa, Arizona will return to the ring this Friday night at the Ft. McDowell Casino in Scottsdale, AZ. Returning from layoff of more than a year due to knee surgery, Becky will be in tough, taking on Suszannah “Destiny” Warner (7-6, 2 KOs), of Leeds, England, and now fighting out of New York, NY.
. . . .
Promoter Jim Bores states, “Becky is a crowd favorite. She knows she will have a tough fight against Suszannah Warner, but she wants to be taken seriously and wanted a hard fight for her first fight back. We would like to thank Suszannah Warner and her team for taking this fight.”
. . . .
Becky, who injured her knee during a pick-up soccer game, is confident and anxious to make her return against a fighter of Warner's caliber. She said, "I think my injury helped me. I've been out for so long, and that has made me hungry to come back. I want to go for it right now. I know it will be a tough fight, but I am confident. It is the perfect fight for me."
. . .
Warner has an extensive amateur background, winning the 2004 New York Golden Gloves and won the 106-pound USA Boxing National Championships in 2005. As a pro, Suszannah owns a victory over 20-fight veteran Yvonne Caples, which earned her the NABF Atomweight (102-pound) title. She has also scored a majority decision win over highly touted prospect Noriko Kariya.
. . .
Garcia is trained by Rafael Valenzuela, and has recently started working with hall of famer Michael Carbajal in Phoenix. "There is good sparring here," she said. "I am sparring with guys at the gym, as well as with some local girls. Alissa DiFazio is 5'6" and 135 pounds, and we've been having some great sparring sessions." Becky fancies herself as a boxer, but she adds, "the guys I spar with, and my trainer tell me that I hit pretty hard." Naturally, her goal is to become a "world champion". "My favorite fighter is Roy Jones, as crazy as it may seem," she said. "He does things in the ring that nobody else can do. He is one of a kind." Becky Garcia is a fresh face who is asking for the tough fights. In other words, she is just what the sport needs.
